"Well, we’ve earned ourselves one more year," Miley said, standing next to the fire, covering her mouth.

"Do we have to keep doing this, Mama?" Jessica asked, looking like she might be sick. "I really liked that boy."

"There will be others, Jess. There are always others, every year." She watched as Sherriff Whitely threw the last bundle onto the fire. A bloody hand slipped from beneath the sheet, and began to blister in the flames.

"Yeah, next year…” Jessica said. “I can't wait."

Miley looked at her daughter with a hint of sadness in her eyes. "At least we'll be safe until then." She put her arm around the girl’s shoulder as they turned to walk away. "Peter, Peter got what he was owed…and we can live free for another year. At least this year there were strangers to take, and not one of our own.”
